About Lagottos
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a rustic and ancient breed of water dogs. They originally served as hunting and retrieving dogs in the marshes of Romagna, Italy. When the marshes were drained, the Lagotto found a new purpose thanks to its extraordinary sense of smell and is now known as the Truffle Hunting Dog.
The Lagotto excels at all scent sports and work and is very good at scent discrimination. The Lagotto loves to learn and needs to have a job. Although many individuals will be happy as companions, most need a job or an activity to keep their brains active. They love Tricks, Scent Sports and Work (Barn hunt, Search and Rescue, Truffling, Antlering, Hunting), Agility, Obedience, Dock diving, Therapy and Service Work.
The Lagotto believes he/she is a full fledged family member and expects to be treated as one. The Lagotto loves to please, is a happy dog and a great family dog. He will get along well with other pets if introduced early and instructed on proper behaviour.
The Lagotto enjoys exercise but needs regular brainwork.
